Spinners Web was established in 1985 to provide a sale-or-return retail outlet for the many handicraft workshops, self-help groups, and individual artisans creating beautiful textile products from the wide range of locally available natural materials such as wool, cotton, sisal, and other fibres.
The company was founded by three women — Jacqueline Resley creator of Kenya Weaverbird Ltd, Jean O’Meara creator of Leocraft Ltd, and Betti Mburu — who shared a common interest in promoting handmade products made from natural fibres, having themselves produced handwoven and knitted items.
In 2006, Jacqueline Resley acquired full ownership of Spinners Web and guided the business through a period of major transition, helping preserve and strengthen what had already become an important platform for Kenyan artisans and craftspeople.
Over the years, Spinners Web has gained a reputation for offering one of the largest and best selections of handcrafted items in Africa. We sell a wide variety of products ranging from home décor and furnishings to clothing, accessories, and jewelry from many different designers.
In 2009, we introduced a guaranteed-space concept that allowed producers to book a specific room, alcove, shelf, or display area where they could showcase their products together and determine their own selling prices. As a result, many well-known workshops and brands such as Sandstorm, Aranibar, and Kenya Weaverbird now have their own dedicated spaces within the shop.
We have also expanded into gourmet foods and locally made beauty products, all produced in Kenya.
Over time, Spinners Web has grown to include products from other Sub-Saharan African countries, and today we are proud to have one of Nairobi’s finest Africana collections, including a superb selection of West African masks and textiles.
Our emphasis has always been on quality products at fair prices, while encouraging our suppliers and artisans to continue developing new ideas and designs that reflect changing tastes and current trends. To better serve our customers, we also have a café inspired by the American diner tradition, serving coffee, tea, pastries, pies, and freshly prepared meals in a relaxed garden setting.
